"Keepin' It Eel" Producer, San Francisco www.unagi442.com Page 1 | 2 | 3 Lee: Questions based on the tracklist from the Keepin' it Eel album. Who’s Condorman? Unagi: He’s this crazy dude that dresses up like a bird in an old Disney movie from the ‘70s. I saw it when I was a kid and was really into it although I haven’t seen it since and don’t really remember too much about it. L: Did you come up in a 2 parent household? U: My folks split up when I was real young but my mom remarried and I grew up with her and my stepdad who is a jazz musician and very cool guy. He turned me onto music and definitely made me want to do this for life. L: Have you ever played Golf? When you think of Golf what comes to mind? U: Just mini-golf, which is great. That song title was basically a cryptic way of remembering what record I sampled for it. L: Have you heard the Tough Guy Soundtrack by Isaac Hayes, when you think of a tough guy what crosses your mind? U: No doubt. When I think of classic tough guys, I gotta go with Clint Eastwood. He’s actually a big music head as well. L: At seventeen what were you into musically? U: All kinds of stuff. I was into weird rock and punk and metal but also loving the hip-hop. When I was 17 it would’ve been like 91/92 so there was a lot of great albums back then. L: In your days, how many times have you had to relocate? U: Many. I moved out the house at 16 and lived all over the place for a while, I used to move like once or twice a year for a long time. Now I’ve been in the Bay going on 7 years so that’s a while for me. In that song though I meant it as a reference to the Japanese people on the west coast being forced to relocate to internment camps during the war. L: Ever been to Europe? Where? If you could touch down in Europe tomorrow where would you plan on goin’? U: Not yet, hopefully soon. I definitely need to check out Amsterdam. L: What happened on The One’s first visit? U: You gotta cop the first album for that. L: What kind of ring? U: That refers to the ring modulator on my sampler. L: What did you sample for Me and You? U: Honestly I don’t remember, some old random shit. I’m bad about writing down what songs I jack stuff from. L: Name one quiet place and one loud place in SF? U: Quiet – the beach. Loud – the bar. L: Do you have a good memory? U: Only when it comes to obscure tv/movie trivia. L: How high? U: Very. L: Got any diamonds? U: Nah, I don’t wear jewelry. I called it that cuz Diamond D used the bassline on Stunts, Blunts and Hip-Hop. L: Name the first soul love song from the 70’s that comes to mind... U: “Walking In The Rain (With The One I Love).” L: What plans lie ahead? U: The third album should be out early first quarter, its gonna be a compilation-style features album, lots of guest emcees in the mix. Might even hear Unagi on the mic for a song or two. Aside from that I’m hoping to do some more soundtrack/licensing stuff, keep DJing around San Francisco, and maybe get a tour together eventually. I also got an EP with this cat Infinito 2017 from Chicago, not sure when that’s dropping but its all recorded, and hopefully a full album with Only Child Jones. L: For more info, let the folks know where they can catch info for albums and anything related to what you got goin’ on. U: www.unagi442.com is the website for Unagi and 442 Records. It needs to be updated bad but you can still listen to songs, read reviews, and order albums on PayPal. L: Thank you for the interview. U: No doubt, thanks for press.
